BudgIT has engaged the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy in discussions aimed at advancing reforms to strengthen Nigeria’s public finance management, fiscal transparency and accountability.
The meeting, led by BudgIT’s Global Director, Oluseun David Onigbinde, provided an opportunity for the civic technology organisation to present evidence-based recommendations on improving fiscal governance and making government financial information more accessible and useful to citizens.
According to BudgIT, the discussions also focused on ongoing reform efforts and ways government and civil society organisations can collaborate to enhance accountability, improve fiscal transparency and strengthen public trust.
The Minister welcomed the recommendations, noting that many of the issues raised are already under consideration as part of the Federal Government’s broader public finance reform agenda.
He also disclosed plans for a comprehensive review of Nigeria’s public finance framework, including the Fiscal Responsibility Act, the Debt Management Office Act, and other key financial regulations, with the objective of addressing longstanding structural challenges rather than implementing isolated reforms.
BudgIT expressed appreciation to the Minister and his team for what it described as an open and constructive engagement, reaffirming its commitment to supporting evidence-based policies that promote transparency, accountability and the efficient management of public resources for the benefit of all Nigerians.
