The Kano State Government KNSG has reiterated its commitment to working with developers and non-governmental organizations to enhance the well-being of its citizens through renewable energy initiatives and energy-efficient practices.
The State Commissioner for Power and Renewable Energy, Dr. Gaddafi Sani Shehu, stated this during a one-day sensitization workshop on Energy Efficiency in Public Buildings, organized by GIZ German Development Partners in collaboration with the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy, held in Kano.
Dr. Gaddafi explained that the workshop was designed to raise awareness about energy efficiency and promote sustainable practices in public buildings to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
He noted that Kano State has made significant progress in climate change mitigation and renewable energy development, citing the installation of solar streetlights and other renewable energy initiatives as examples of the government’s commitment.
“Energy efficiency in public buildings and sustainable energy use represent best practices for energy conservation. We must also continue to sensitize the public on the dangers of energy waste and the benefits of renewable alternatives,” Dr. Gaddafi said.
The Energy Adviser, Mr. Odima Okodi Iyaha, spoke extensively on the Partnership for Energy Efficiency in Buildings (PEEB) a multi-country initiative that promotes energy-efficient and climate-resilient building design and operations.
She emphasized the importance of integrating efficient design principles into the planning, construction, and maintenance of public structures.
Also speaking, Dr. Manassah Babale Shitta, an energy consultant, highlighted various energy conservation measures that enhance security and minimize environmental impact. He discussed topics such as energy flows in buildings, standby power reduction, and the use of reflective roofing, solar energy, insulation, and efficient lighting systems.
In his presentation, Ahmad Tijjani Ahmad from the Energy Commission of Nigeria highlighted the importance and benefits of conducting energy audits in public buildings, emphasizing the role of proper management in reducing operational costs.
In his closing remarks, the Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Engineer Ismail Ibrahim Muhammad, commended the organizers and participants for their dedication to promoting energy efficiency. He stressed the need for continuous capacity building to achieve long-term sustainability goals.
