President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on Nigerian editors to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and integrity in their work, emphasizing the crucial role of the media in strengthening democracy and promoting national unity.

Speaking at the Annual Conference of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE)held at the State House, Abuja, the President commended the leadership of the Guild for sustaining a culture of reflection and professional engagement through its annual gathering.

Tinubu said the theme of this year’s conference, “Democratic Governance and National Cohesion: The Role of Editors,” was timely, noting that it provided an opportunity for journalists to assess how media narratives shape national direction and public trust.

“Throughout our history, journalism in Nigeria has been more than a profession. It has been an instrument of national awakening,” the President said.

“From the early newspapers that challenged colonial injustice to the principled voices that defended democracy, the Nigerian press has stood firm in defence of reason, dignity and progress.”

While honouring journalists who endured hardship and persecution in the struggle for democracy, President Tinubu warned that the freedom won through their sacrifices must be preserved through responsible and ethical journalism.

He urged editors to exercise their influence with fairness, accuracy, and a deep sense of national duty.

“As editors and managers of the national information space, you shape narratives and influence public understanding,” he said.

“Criticism, when informed and constructive, serves the nation; but cynicism that breeds mistrust can weaken the very foundations of society.”

The President cautioned against the dangers of misinformation in the digital age, where social media allows every citizen to act as a publisher, stressing that verification and balance must remain the anchors of journalism.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to economic stability and inclusive growth, Tinubu said the government’s reforms were aimed at restoring macroeconomic balance, encouraging investment, and improving citizens’ welfare.

“Economic reforms alone cannot build the Nigeria we seek. Nation-building requires trust, cooperation, and shared responsibility,” he noted.

“The media has a distinct role in fostering a climate of reason, unity, and hope.”

President Tinubu concluded by urging editors to continue reporting boldly and truthfully, holding government accountable while helping to build a more united and prosperous Nigeria.

“Let us choose clarity over confusion, responsibility over recklessness, and hope over despair,” he said.

“The stories we tell ourselves as a nation determine the country we become.”
