The Kano State Ministry for Local Government has announced new measures to address critical water quality challenges and curb the spread of water-borne diseases across the state’s 44 Local Government Areas (LGAs).

The Commissioner for Local Government, Alhaji Mohammed Tajo Othman, disclosed this during a meeting with a delegation from the Development Innovation Lab, where he outlined a comprehensive strategy combining scientific research and local innovation to enhance water safety.

According to the Commissioner, the initiative leverages advanced water treatment technologies, including precision chlorine dosing machines and natural purification methods, aimed at ensuring every community has access to safe drinking water.

The meeting was convened to review the outcome of the Chlorine Sensitization and Redemption Pilot Project, carried out in two LGAs, and to discuss its possible expansion, technical support, and sustainability.

The Development Innovation Lab team, led by Professor Elisa, included experts from California, Michigan, Berkeley, and Chicago, who presented their findings and recommendations for scaling up the initiative to other parts of the state.

Alhaji Tajo Othman stressed that “prevention is always better than cure,” directing Local Government Councils to prioritize the provision of potable water in their respective areas.

He further requested the inclusion of student exchange programs and training initiatives under the project to build local capacity in water science and technology a move he said would help create a skilled workforce of water treatment professionals.

In her presentation, Professor Elisa explained that the project applies a scientific, evidence-based approach, developing adaptable water treatment protocols suited to Kano’s diverse environmental conditions.

Systematic testing across LGAs, she said, ensures reliable and sustainable results.

The meeting also discussed potential collaboration in other Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) thematic areas, underscoring the government’s commitment to promoting public health and well-being.

By building on the pilot project’s success and strengthening partnerships, the state government aims to drastically reduce waterborne diseases and ensure equitable access to clean, safe drinking water for all residents of Kano State.
