The chairman of the House Standing Education Committee Kano state house of assembly, Alhaji Sulaiman Mukhtar Ishaq, says an Ak-47 rifle and live ammunition were found at Maikwatashi Secondary School Nasarawa local government area.
Mukhtar, who doubles as member Representing the Madobi constituency, made the disclosure while presenting a report during plenary presided over by the speaker Alhaji Jibril Isma’il Falgore.
According to him, earlier member Representing Nasarawa constituency Alhaji Yusuf Bello Aliyu raised a motion in September 2024 calling on the state government to relocate and reconstruct Maikwatashi secondary school.
He pointed out that, during deliberations it was agreed that the educational infrastructure needs improvement and that the current condition of Maikwatashi government secondary school warrants further investigation to determine the viability of relocation and reconstruction.
The chairman said the house committee on education was assigned with the responsibility of examining and providing recommendations for further legislative action.
Mukhtar highlighted that after several fact finding and site visits to the three schools GSS Maikwatshi, GGSS Maikwatashi and Zawa’I special primary school it was discovered that the school lack security where criminals access the premises and use it as a weapon storage.
“As evidence by the police shows that a live ammunition and AK-47 rifle was discovered, windows, doors, wooden structures and roofing materials were stolen “
“In April 2024 thieves vandalized a toilet facility under construction by the world bank AGILE program, tools and equipment were carted away while the attempt to steal the Borehole pump proved abortive”
Mukhtar noted that, criminals have free access to GGSS Maikwatashi with 1,030 students and 17 teaching staff, while Zawa’I primary school has only 4 students due to security concern.
The chairman stressed that, the committee recommended the repair of perimeter fencing, through assessment to identify more suitable location for the school, renovation and reconstruction of dilapidated classroom blocks.
Others are deployment of more teaching staff, as well as the engagement of school based management committees SBMC, PTA and local leaders in monitoring and safe guarding the schools.
“Given the security threat, the four Pupils currently enrolled at Zawa’I primary school should be relocated to a safer school and immediate action should be taken to block the small pathway through Zawa’I primary to prevent further access by criminals into Maikwatashi secondary school “
After careful deliberations, the house unanimously adopted the report and urged the committee to engage the state commissioner for education, the education secretary of Nasarawa LGA, the executive secretary of Kano State Senior Secondary Schools Management Board KSSMB, and other relevant stakeholders for necessary action.
