El-Rufai, who served as the Governor of Kaduna State from 2015 to 2023, played a crucial role in the APC’s formation and its subsequent election victories.

However, he believes the party has strayed from its founding ideals and is no longer a viable platform for his progressive values.

In his resignation letter, El-Rufai announced his decision to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP), which he believes aligns better with his vision for Nigeria.
