The current Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics) and a renowned expert in Polymer Chemistry, Professor Haruna Musa, has emerged as the most widely accepted candidate in the ongoing Vice-Chancellor selection process at Bayero University, Kano (BUK).

The outcome followed the 7th Congregation Parley held on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, where Prof. Musa secured a commanding 853 votes far ahead of four other distinguished contenders.

    Isa Kaita College

    • Prof. Sani Muhammad Gumel (former DVC, Academics) – 364 votes

Presiding over the event, outgoing Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sagir Adamu Abbas emphasized that while the community acceptability vote contributes 20% to the final selection, it plays a crucial role in guiding the Governing Council’s decision.

“This process reflects the strength of our democratic and transparent institutional culture,” Prof. Abbas stated.

“All the candidates have demonstrated outstanding commitment to the University’s development.”

In a commendable show of sportsmanship, one of the leading candidates, Prof. Sani Muhammad Gumel, endorsed the outcome, describing it as “fair, transparent, and credible,” and pledged full support for Prof. Musa.

The selection process also drew praise from prominent education figures.

Former Minister of Education, Prof. Rukayyatu Ahmed Rufa’i, and former NOUN Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdalla Uba Adamu, congratulated BUK’s leadership for the transparent process and the institution’s forward momentum.

Paradigm News reports that, the final appointment of the next Vice-Chancellor now rests with the BUK Governing Council, which will weigh all selection components including merit, vision, administrative experience, and community acceptability.
