Citizens for Development and Education (CDE), in collaboration with the Organization for Community and Civic Engagement (OCCEN), and Citizens Voice Against Corruption, has condemned Federal High Court Judge, Justice Simon Amobeda, for ruling against the forthcoming local government council elections in Kano.

This was noted during a press conference held on Thursday at the Nigeria Union Of Journalists Secretariat, Kano, alleging that Amobeda has consistently been favoring the opposition party by undermining democracy and the state’s independent electoral commission.

Speaking at the conference, Executive Director, CDE, Ambassador Ibrahim Waiya noted that “what we are actually witnessing in Kano is quite really unfortunate, some elements in the society are taking advantage of the judiciary to cause disharmony in the state.

“These actions are not healthy for the development of our democracy.

“We condemn this attempt, whereby the Kano state government despite the investment of human and material resources, the effort of the state government to conduct elections is trying to be frustrated.

“Every state has gotten its own elected executives at the level of the state and it’s also conducting its affairs.

“But unfortunately here in Kano, we have never gotten it right.”

Waiya highlighted that since the inauguration of the current government in 2023, it has been battling with judicial cases that affected some of the development plans in the state.

Noting that “about a week ago the state high court judge, under Justice Sanusi Maji, issued an order prohibiting individuals, organizations and political parties from making any attempt to truncate the process of conducting local government council election in the state.

“But unfortunately, the federal high court has also given another judgment, which pronounced the sacking of all the leadership of the council.

“Which is an attempt to frustrate all the plans that have been made and that have already been on ground to conduct the elections in the state.

“We are not in any way becoming partisan or trying to share any kind of sentiment, but we are trying to be objective in the sense that things that the political opposition are doing are things that are not representing the interests of the people.

“The interest of the Kano people is for the state to be peaceful and have an enhanced social cohesion.”

Waiya disclosed that Kano has complete authority and power like every other state in Nigeria.
