The Kano Civil Society Forum has called on the state government to expedite the establishment of a People with Disabilities Commission. This appeal was made during a press conference held on Wednesday by the forum’s president, Muhammad Bello.

According to Muhammad Bello, the creation of such a commission is crucial for ensuring inclusiveness and good governance in the state. He cited the examples of Plateau and Yobe states, which have already established similar commissions.

Muhammad Bello commended the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for acknowledging the importance of people living with disabilities in its policies. However, he emphasized the need for a dedicated commission to address the specific needs of this community.

Data from the Association of People Living with Disabilities in Kano estimates that there are approximately 43,418 people with disabilities in the state as of 2022. The proposed commission would help in acquiring accurate data, facilitating proper budgeting and policy formulation.

Muhammad Bello warned that failing to establish the commission would leave people with disabilities vulnerable to abuse and discrimination, depriving them of opportunities for employment and equal participation in society
