The Kano State Executive Council, under the leadership of Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the renaming of Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Kano, to its original name, Northwest University, Kano.
This decision was reached during the council’s 21st sitting on November 29, 2024, and is in line with the university’s foundational purpose established in 2012.
According to Sunusi A. Kofar Naisa, Public Relations Officer, Ministry for Higher Education (MHE), Kano, the council has also approved the establishment of Yusuf Maitama Sule College of Education and Advanced Studies in Ghari Local Government.
The institution is modeled after existing colleges like Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso College of Education in Tudun Wada and Mallam Aminu Kano College of Legal and Islamic Studies.
The new college is expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing teacher training and advanced studies within the state.
The renaming of Northwest University honors the memory of the late elder statesman, Dr. Yusuf Maitama Sule, by assigning his name to the newly established institution.
This move reflects the state government’s dedication to recognizing and preserving the legacies of Kano’s distinguished leaders.
To formalize these changes, the council has directed that relevant bills be forwarded to the Kano State House of Assembly for legislative endorsement.
This legislative process will ensure the smooth implementation of the decisions regarding the university’s renaming and the establishment of the new college.
In addition to these developments, the council approved a policy reform extending the retirement age for professors in universities from 65 to 70 years, while academic staff in other higher institutions will now retire at 65 instead of 60.
This reform aims to enhance academic staff retention and continuity in higher education institutions.
These initiatives highlight the Kano State Government’s commitment to advancing education, improving access, and honoring its leaders’ contributions to national development.
The renaming of the university and the establishment of the Yusuf Maitama Sule College of Education mark transformative steps in education and public service in the state.
