Hon. Ahmed Shuaibu-Gara Gombe, Competition Director of the ongoing Gombe State Inter-secondary Schools Athletics Competition and Principals’ Cup Football Competition 2025, has attributed the scarcity of sponsors in Nigerian sports to lack of transparency, financial probity, and good governance.
Gombe to Host Inter-Tertiary Institutions Sports Championship
In an interview with sports journalists, Gombe revealed that 80% of funds released for sports competitions in the past were mismanaged and unaccounted for, leading to a decline in sponsor interest.
“But we want to use this kind of grassroots events to restore their confidence, regain the trust of the corporate world to come and sponsor sports event in Nigeria”
To address this issue, Gombe has pledged to ensure prudent management of funds and restore the confidence of sports sponsors.
He aims to secure sponsors for future editions of the Gombe State Principals Cup Football Competition and Athletics Championship.
“So, we are starting from Gombe State, then to the North East region, Northern region and then go national,” he added
Gombe’s efforts are part of a broader initiative to revive sponsor interest in Nigerian sports, starting from the grassroots level in Gombe State, then expanding to the North East region, Northern region, and eventually nationwide.
