The Kebbi State Government has applauded the Nigerian media, particularly the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), for their significant contribution to the growth, consolidation, and survival of the nation’s democracy.
Chief of Staff to the Kebbi State Governor, Barrister Attahiru Maccido, and the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Alhaji Ahmed Yakubu, gave the commendation on Saturday during the maiden annual lecture organised by the Correspondents’ Chapel of the NUJ, Kebbi State Council.
The lecture, titled “Media, Democracy and Good Governance,” was held in collaboration with the Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Enlightenment and Orientation, Alhaji Ibrahim Abubakar Jombali.
Maccido, who chaired the event, described the media as the “fourth estate of the realm,” noting that journalists play a significant role in ensuring that government adheres to constitutional responsibilities.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Alhaji Ahmed Yakubu Birnin Kebbi, commended the chapel for the initiative and reassured journalists that the state government would continue to maintain a cordial working relationship with the media community.
Also speaking, Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Enlightenment and Orientation, Alhaji Ibrahim Jombali, who sponsored the lecture, described members of the Correspondents’ Chapel as pillars of successful governance, acknowledging their role in shaping public opinion.
Similarly, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Communication and Strategy, Alhaji Abdullahi Idris Zuru, urged journalists to remain fair and balanced in reporting government activities, stressing that Governor Nasir Idris is committed to sustaining peace and addressing insecurity in the state.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Kabir Wurma, explained that the choice of the lecture theme was deliberate, adding that it was aimed at highlighting the achievements of the current administration.
Delivering the keynote lecture, Dr. Abdullahi Sani of the Department of European Languages and Literary Studies, Federal University Birnin Kebbi (FUBK), emphasized that the media—both modern and traditional—remains indispensable to democratic consolidation and the promotion of good governance in Nigeria.
