The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to upholding human rights, the rule of law, and justice, particularly in the face of insurgency in the North East.
Fagbemi made the assertion while receiving the report of the Special Independent Investigative Panel on Human Rights Violations during Counter-Insurgency Operations in the North East (SIIP-NE).

The report examined allegations of human rights violations, including forced abortions, sexual and gender-based violence, and extrajudicial killings.
The Minister emphasized that the government would strengthen mechanisms to ensure military operations are conducted with regard for human rights and international humanitarian law.
He also announced the establishment of an Implementation Committee to review the report and develop recommendations for execution.
The Chairman of SIIP-NE, Hon. Justice Abdu Aboki (Rtd.), urged the government to implement the report’s recommendations, which would enhance Nigeria’s counter-insurgency operations while upholding human rights and strengthening the criminal justice system.
