The recent decision by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to rename the University of Maiduguri after the late former President Muhammadu Buhari has drawn widespread commendation from across the nation.

The announcement, made during a special expanded federal executive council meeting, is seen as a deeply symbolic and well-deserved tribute to a man whose life was marked by service, patriotism, and a deep belief in the unity and progress of Nigeria.

Beyond its ceremonial value, the gesture reflects the nation’s collective memory and appreciation of Buhari’s contributions, especially to the educational and security development of the North-East.

Muhammadu Buhari, who served as the military governor of the then North Eastern State, played a key role in establishing the University of Maiduguri in 1975.

At a time when educational infrastructure was scarce in the region, Buhari’s foresight and determination gave birth to an institution that would go on to serve millions, becoming a centre of learning and research across the Sahel.

Naming the university after him is, therefore, not just a symbolic act—it is an affirmation of history and an expression of Nigeria’s gratitude for a man who laid solid foundations for future generations.

Buhari Was a Man of Integrity and Compassion – Abdullahi Gaya

The special expanded federal executive council meeting convened by President Tinubu was described by many as not only solemn but historic.

Attended by top government officials, governors, and stakeholders from across the country, the meeting reflected the administration’s readiness to honour legacies that represent national values.

Renaming a university is no small matter—it requires reflection and respect for both the institution and the individual being recognised.

In the case of Muhammadu Buhari, these conditions are clearly fulfilled. He lived a disciplined life and left behind a legacy that speaks for itself.

Moreover, the state burial given to the late president was not merely an honour to him as a person—it was a statement of respect to the entire Katsina State.

The grand show of unity, from military honours to tributes from world leaders, revealed the high regard with which Buhari is held.

It was, as many described, not just a funeral but a celebration of character, sacrifice, and modesty. Katsina, through Buhari, gave Nigeria one of its most influential leaders—and the nation responded with full national honours.

In a heartfelt statement signed by Dr. Ibrahim Kaita, the renaming of the University of Maiduguri was described as “a great honour to a man of peace, humility, and patriotic leadership.”

Dr. Kaita further noted that Buhari’s legacy was not limited to politics but deeply rooted in the lives and hopes of everyday Nigerians.

According to him, this decision by President Tinubu will forever keep Buhari’s name alive, not only in official records but in the academic identity of the North-East.

Dr. Kaita also praised the strong support shown by Governor Dikko Umar Radda of Katsina State, who stood by the Buhari family throughout the mourning period.

From coordinating state arrangements to personally receiving dignitaries and comforting visitors, Governor Radda’s actions have touched the hearts of many.

His deep affection for the Buhari family and for the people of Katsina was clearly demonstrated, showing maturity and true leadership in a moment of great sorrow.

“This support,” Dr. Kaita said, “is not just a gesture—it reflects the governor’s loyalty, care, and connection with the people.”

Governor Radda’s efforts have earned him wide respect and have brought the people of Katsina even closer to their government. His response during this difficult time showed how true leaders rise to the occasion with compassion and courage.

Beyond the emotions, the renaming of the university also carries a powerful message for Northern Nigeria and the country at large.

It shows the lasting value of visionary leadership and how contributions to education can live on long after a person is gone.

Buhari’s dream for the North-East is still alive, and through the University of Maiduguri—now Muhammadu Buhari University—his vision will continue to inspire students, support communities, and light the path for the future.

While the nation grieves, moments like this show the strength of collective memory and the importance of honouring those who made lasting contributions.

Nigeria’s democracy grows not just through elections, but through respect for those who helped shape its direction.

Muhammadu Buhari may no longer be with us, but his commitment to order, national unity, and education is now part of the country’s living institutions.

Indeed, this move by President Tinubu links the past with the future. It shows clearly that Nigeria does not forget its heroes, and that the country is willing to recognize those who gave their lives to serve the public.

In naming a university after Buhari, the country has not only honoured a man—it has reaffirmed its belief in peace, service, and education as lasting tools for building a stronger nation.
