In the vibrant atmosphere of the National Assembly, the screening and confirmation of Rt. Hon. Yusuf Abdullahi Ata as the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development on Wednesday, October 30, 2024 was not just a procedural formality; it was a profound testament to the power of unity in leadership and governance.

This event, marked by the presence of hundreds of well-wishers from Kano and beyond, illustrated a collective commitment to progress and collaboration across party lines in Nigeria.

The overwhelming support for Hon. Ata was palpable, transcending political affiliations and resonating with the core values of our democratic fabric. Senators Sani Rufai Hanga (representing Kano Central) and Kawu Sumaila (representing Kano North) both of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Kano, exemplified this spirit of bipartisan camaraderie.

Senator Hanga’s humorous remark about the potential political ramifications of Hon. Ata’s nomination, suggesting it could pose a threat to his re-election bid, only underscores the high regard in which Ata is held.

This light-hearted exchange, punctuated by Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s reassuring words that Senator Hanga is protected, reflects a broader understanding among our leaders: that the appointment of capable individuals serves the greater good.

The Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibril, the sole APC Senator from Kano, articulated a crucial point during the screening.

He praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for selecting Hon. Ata, asserting that this choice not only showcases the administration’s commitment to effective governance but also fosters a sense of unity among the people of Kano.

By recognizing Ata’s capabilities, Jibril emphasized how his appointment enhances the political landscape, potentially solidifying the support for the APC in the upcoming 2027 elections.

Hon. Ata’s distinguished history as a former legislator and Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly equips him with unique insights and experiences essential for his new role.

His reputation as a dedicated public servant, coupled with his proven track record in governance, instills confidence that he will adeptly address the pressing challenges in the housing and urban development sector.

The presence of all former members of the Kano State House of Assembly from 1999 to date at the screening, along with a delegation of past House of Representatives members led by Alhaji Aminu Suleiman Goro, underscores the deep-rooted respect and support for Hon. Ata.

Such unity is not merely symbolic; it is indicative of the collective hope for a revitalized approach to housing and urban development in Nigeria.

In terms of the politics of Kano State, a huge re-alignment is taking place as the camp of the NNPP in the State are in serious panic because of this appointment; a testament to the cross-party popularity of Rt. Hon. Ata.

This totally upturns most of the permutations by the ruling party in Kano looking into the next election circles.

The challenges we face in this sector are multifaceted—ranging from housing shortages to urban infrastructure deficits.

However, with leaders like Hon. Ata at the helm, we can anticipate innovative solutions grounded in community engagement and strategic planning.

His experience positions him to bridge the gap between government initiatives and the needs of the citizens, fostering an environment where every Nigerian can aspire to secure adequate housing.

As we look ahead, it is crucial to harness the momentum generated by this confirmation. Hon. Ata’s imminent swearing-in marks not just the beginning of a new chapter in his career but a renewed commitment to the ideals of transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in governance.

The overwhelming support he received is a clarion call for all of us—regardless of our political affiliations—to rally behind our leaders and work together toward a common goal: sustainable urban development that meets the needs of all Nigerians.

In conclusion, the confirmation of Rt. Hon. Yusuf Abdullahi Ata as Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development is not merely an appointment; it is a rallying p”int for unity and progress.

Let us embrace this opportunity to collaborate, ensuring that our efforts lead to tangible improvements in housing and urban development across Nigeria. Together, we can build a future where every Nigerian has access to safe, affordable housing and thriving communities.
