Gombe, Nigeria – Following his impressive performance at the Gombe State Inter-secondary Schools Athletics Championships, 16-year-old Abdullahi A. Abubakar has expressed his ambition to become an Olympic medalist.
Abubakar, a student of Government Science Technical College, won six medals and was crowned the fastest in the 100m boys final.

He received cash rewards for his outstanding performance and has now set his sights on the ultimate prize in athletics.
“I want to become an Olympic medalist,” Abubakar said. “I have the qualities, but I need competition to improve myself. I thank Uncle Gara Gombe for giving me and others a chance to try.”
Abubakar’s school, Government Science Technical College, has also recognized his achievement, with the principal, Mr. Salisu Abbas, showering gifts on outstanding performing students to promote sports among young athletes.

The principal also praised the organizers of the championships, calling for the competition to be held annually to discover young talents hidden in secondary schools across Gombe.
In a similar development, the principal of Government Day Secondary School, Mr. Ahmadu Gombe, has awarded scholarships to students who won medals for the school.
