The Akwa Ibom State Police Command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police (CP) Baba Mohammed Azare, has disbursed over ₦37 million to families of police officers who died in active service.
At a presentation ceremony held on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, CP Azare handed over cheques totaling ₦37,280,296.36 to 33 beneficiaries, who are next-of-kin to the deceased officers. The disbursement was made on behalf of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. Olukayode Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, as part of the IGP’s Family Welfare and Group Life Assurance Scheme.
Speaking at the event, CP Azare described the gesture as a mark of honour for the sacrifices made by the fallen officers in ensuring national peace and security. He expressed deep appreciation to the IGP for his consistent support and prioritization of police welfare.
“The cheques we present today will not replace the lives lost, but they are a reminder that the Nigeria Police Force will never forget the gallantry and sacrifice of its officers,” CP Azare said.
He urged the beneficiaries to make prudent use of the funds to honour the legacies of their loved ones, while reaffirming the police command’s commitment to upholding the welfare of both serving and deceased officers.
The CP further noted that the welfare initiative is a testament to the Inspector General’s concern for the well-being of personnel and their families, especially those who have paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.
The event was coordinated by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Timfon John, LLB, who commended the beneficiaries for their strength and resilience.
