People living with disabilities PWDs in Kano State gathered to commemorate the 2024 International Day for Persons with Disabilities at the SBMC Hall of State Universal Basic Education.

During the event, attendees highlighted the need for the establishment of a dedicated commission to address the specific needs of people with disabilities in the state.

The gathering brought together a range of stakeholders including education experts, policymakers, caregivers, and community leaders to address the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities, particularly in accessing quality education and equal opportunities for protection as outlined in national and international frameworks.

Dr. Auwal Halilu, Co-Chair of the Civil Society Organisation of Kano State Accountability Forum on Education, underscored the importance of the proposed commission in ensuring the comprehensive inclusion of people with disabilities in policy-making processes and advocating for their meaningful participation in decision-making.

Similarly the executive director Executive Director of the Adolescent Health and Information Projects (AHIP), Hajiya Mairo Bello emphasized the objective of the event, which aimed to engage individuals living with disabilities in discussions to identify their specific needs, saying the ultimate goal is to collaboratively design a work plan that offers sustainable solutions to the challenges faced by this community.

Stakeholders Urges JAMB To Address Challenges Faced by PWDs

During the meeting, a cross-section of individuals with disabilities voiced their concerns regarding the persistent obstacles they encounter, including social and economic discrimination, stigmatization, and limited access to education and employment opportunities, acknowledging the efforts of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf in championing education, attendees lauded his dedication to addressing these issues.

Participants expressed their frustration over the financial barriers preventing many individuals with disabilities from pursuing education and securing employment opportunities, despite possessing valuable skills and talents.

Key highlights of the event included panel discussions between facilitators and individuals with disabilities, providing a platform to share their daily life challenges and experiences.

This interactive session aimed to foster a deeper understanding of the obstacles faced by people with disabilities and explore potential solutions to enhance their quality of life.

The event was organized by K-SAFE, AHIP, GEP and supported by FCDO PLANE Nigeria.
