There is no gainsaying that Ali Nuhu is a household name in Northern Nigeria, and indeed, across the nation.

He has distinguished himself as a Hausa film actor, producer, and director of some of the most memorable Hausa films.

Among his peers who ventured into the film industry and rose to fame in the late nineties, Ali Nuhu stands out.

He has managed to stay above unnecessary controversies, maintained a stable family life, and cultivated an unparalleled fan base.

Let me digress a little to share that, initially, I was not a fan of Hausa films. I was among those who opposed the proliferation of Kano Market Literature (KML)—love novels that inspired the Hausa home videos, which eventually gave rise to the Hausa film industry.

However, when scholars like Professor Abdallah Uba Adamu of Bayero University, Kano, and others began to engage with Hausa films, I came to see their cultural and artistic value.

Hausa films soon spread across Northern Nigeria like wildfire. At the same time, Nigerian films gained recognition nationally and internationally.

Yet, the so-called Nigerian films largely reflected Igbo or Yoruba culture, often dominated by themes of voodoo, witchcraft, and babalawos.

    The Kannywood Icon: Abba El-Mustapha

Malam Ibrahim Sheme, a seasoned journalist and author, played a pivotal role in elevating the Hausa film industry.

He launched FIM Magazine, a Hausa version of India’s Stardust Magazine, providing a platform for showcasing Hausa films, their styles, ambitions, challenges, and prospects.

The birth of Kannywood—the Hausa film industry based primarily in Kano—marked a turning point, much like Hollywood, Bollywood, and Nollywood for their respective industries.

Ali Nuhu emerged at the heart of these developments. Despite initial concerns that Hausa films mimicked Indian cinema with little reflection of Hausa culture or Islamic values, Ali Nuhu and his contemporaries, including the late Ahmad S. Nuhu, Sani Danja, and Adam A. Zango, forged a path forward.

Their contributions paved the way for an industry that eventually found its own voice.

Ali Nuhu’s venture into Nollywood further solidified his reputation. His seamless adaptation to roles in Nigerian films—portraying characters from diverse cultural backgrounds—brought greater recognition to Hausa cinema.

He mentored many emerging talents in Kannywood, contributing to the growth of the industry and inspiring a new generation of actors.

Rahama Ibrahim Sadau: A Star in Multiple Film Industries

Ali Nuhu’s success is rooted in his strong educational foundation. Even before entering the film industry, he was well-educated and continued to pursue learning alongside his acting career.

His academic achievements, including a doctorate degree, have further distinguished him.

This, coupled with his humility and professionalism, has made him a brand ambassador for various enterprises.

In recent years, Ali Nuhu has also made significant strides in politics. During President Buhari’s administration, he was a prominent supporter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and contributed to the party’s success.

His recognition by President Buhari and his efforts to ensure the election of President Bola Tinubu further highlight his influence.

On January 12, 2024, Ali Nuhu was appointed Managing Director of the Nigerian Film Corporation, a role he assumed with widespread acclaim.

His appointment was celebrated across the North and beyond as well-deserved. His educational background, industry expertise, and youthfulness uniquely qualify him for the position.

The North has every reason to celebrate Ali Nuhu. He inspires many and motivates young people to pursue their dreams

. His once-exuberant dance routines have given way to a more mature and guiding presence, helping to shape the next generation.

One might ask: is it an exaggeration to refer to him as King Ali Nuhu? Certainly not. Congratulations, Ali Nuhu, on your first year in office.
