A Petrol tanker with registration number KMC 6412 F has crashed in Majiya village of Taura local government area of Jigawa State North West Nigeria killing more than 90 people.
Over 50 people who sustained various degrees of injuries were hospitalized.
The Jigawa State Police spokesperson DSP Shiisu Lawal confirmed the incident in a press statement.
He said, the incident occurred at around 12:30 am on Wednesday with the tanker said to have fallen, making villagers to scoop fuel before the explosion.
He said: “Today (Wednesday) a petrol tanker from Port Harcourt going to Nguru in Yobe state reached Majiya village of Taura local government area at around 12:30am the driver lost control at Majiya and falls down.”
According to him, contents in the tanker flooded gutters and drainages in village where villagers started fetching the fuel when the petrol went into flame.
“As a result 95 people confirmed died and 50 have been hospitalised receiving treatment”. DSP Lawal said.
