The Kano State Anti-corruption and Public Complaints Commission has launched an investigation into a massive foreign scholarship fraud worth N1.5 billion.
The commission is questioning two top officials from the state Ministry of Higher Education regarding 1,001 students supposedly studying in India and Kenya under the government’s foreign scholarship scheme.
The state government sponsored 1,001 postgraduate students to pursue their master’s degrees in India and Uganda, but only 418 students were actually sent abroad for studies.
This raises serious questions about the whereabouts of the remaining students.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf had inaugurated the foreign scholarship scheme and even hosted a farewell dinner for the first batch of 550 beneficiaries at the Government House.
He commended former Governor Rabi’u Kwankwaso for introducing the scheme.
The Commission’s Public Relations Officer, Kabiru A. Kabiru, confirmed the investigation and warned that anyone found involved in the alleged scholarship scam would be prosecuted, regardless of their position.
