The Kano State government has taken a significant step towards ensuring the safety of its riverine communities by approving the procurement of life jackets.
This move is aimed at protecting the lives and properties of people in areas prone to boat mishaps.
According to the Information Officer, Ministry of Transportation, Ibrahim Adamu Kofar Nassarawa, the government has witnessed several boat accidents in local communities, necessitating immediate action.
To address this, the government will distribute life jackets to riverine communities as part of its efforts to reduce boat mishaps.
The ministry plans to collaborate with affected local governments to conduct a comprehensive survey and implement safety measures to improve water transportation.
This includes undertaking livelihood surveys to identify challenges and develop strategies to tackle them.
Alhaji Abdulmumin Musa Aliyu, Permanent Secretary of the ministry, emphasized the meeting’s purpose was to discuss water transportation issues and find solutions to boat mishaps statewide.
He stressed the present administration’s commitment to protecting lives and properties and urged local government councils to cooperate with the ministry.
This development is part of Governor Abba Yusuf’s efforts to improve the lives of Kano State citizens, as seen in his signing of the 2024 budget aimed at restoration and transformation.
The government’s focus on urban resilience and sustainable development is also evident in its participation in the Multi-City Challenge Africa.
