    NEMA, Stakeholders Meet to Bolster Disaster Management

    The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) held a stakeholders’ meeting to enhance collaboration and response to emergencies in Kano State.

    The meeting offered vital opportunity to Share thoughts, especially given the increasing threats that various disasters pose to economic and social well-being.

    Dr. Nura Abdullahi, NEMA Kano Territorial Office Coordinator, emphasized the importance of synergy and effective coordination among stakeholders to manage emergencies, citing frequent incidents like floods, building collapses, and transportation accidents.

    Abdullahi explained that bringing stakeholders together reinforces a shared commitment to disaster risk reduction and preparedness in response.

    “This meeting is essential for enhancing our collective ability to manage emergencies effectively.

    He emphasized the need to collaborate with stakeholders to reduce community vulnerability to various hazards, noting that failing to take swift, appropriate action can often escalate emergencies.

    Abdullahi reiterated NEMA’s commitment to fulfilling its mandate by engaging with critical stakeholders in disaster response and mitigation strategies.

    The coordinator urged residents to take proactive measures to prevent disasters in their communities.

    Also speaking, Alhaji Isyaku Abdullahi-Kubarachi, the Executive Secretary SEMA, described the meeting is timely, stating “Preparedness saves lives, livelihoods,money and property”.

    “It is a fact that we can not stop disasters, especially natural ones, but through careful planning and preparedness, we can significantly curtail their impact on our communities and even prevent avert man-made disasters”

    He noted that a high-powered committee, led by Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam, was established to oversee the desilting of drainages across all 44 local governments to prevent flooding, which minimized floods in the state this rainy season.

    The resource person, Abdulhadi Tukur, Head Research and Rescue NEMA Kano office, presented a paper titled

    “Overview of Coordination in Disaster Waste Management”

    The event witnessed turn out of representatives of the Police, NSCDC, Nigerian Red Cross, Kano State Fire Service, Media, NiMet, Nigeria Army, NEMA, SEMA and Kano State Ministry of Health among others.
