The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has addressed concerns raised about the ongoing Northwest Zone Sports Competitions for Primary School Boys and Girls, currently taking place at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Dutse, Jigawa State.
In response to reports suggesting that some participants had threatened to withdraw over logistical shortcomings, Mrs. Oshiomoba Esther, Head of Monitoring at the Dutse Centre and a senior official from the UBEC headquarters in Abuja, said the commission has provided all necessary support to ensure the success of the tournament.

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, Mrs. Esther emphasised that UBEC is deeply concerned about the welfare of participating athletes. She confirmed that the Commission has instructed the Local Organising Committee (LOC) to make immediate improvements to available facilities.
“The commission is committed to the success of this event and will not ignore the concerns of athletes. We’ve seen improvements already—pitches have been properly marked, and the number of match officials has been increased,”
Mrs. Esther called on the LOC and relevant stakeholders to continue working in synergy to address any challenges that may arise throughout the tournament.

She acknowledged that while no hosting arrangement is perfect, continuous improvement is key.
“Honestly, such events may not be 100 percent perfect, but with dedication and collaboration, we can keep improving and ensure that the athletes, coaches, and officials are comfortable throughout the competition,” she said.
She praised the sportsmanship, patience, and dedication demonstrated by the athletes, coaches, and officials, urging them to remain resilient and be good ambassadors of their respective states.
The three-day tournament, which features participants from across the Northwest geopolitical zone, will culminate in a closing ceremony on Thursday at the NYSC camp in Dutse.
Winners and runners-up will qualify to represent the zone at the national stage in Abuja later this year.
Dignitaries from within and outside Jigawa State are expected to attend the closing ceremony.
UBEC’s reassurance comes as a boost to organizers and participants, reinforcing the importance of sports as a tool for unity, talent development, and grassroots education advancement.
