A bird flu outbreak has been confirmed in Kano State, Nigeria, resulting in the death of 32 birds.
The outbreak was first detected on December 7, 2024, when a young man brought a dead guinea fowl to the Gwale Veterinary Clinic.

After a presumptive diagnosis, the bird’s sample was sent to the National Veterinary Reference Laboratory in Jos, where the disease was confirmed to be bird flu .
The State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, confirmed the outbreak and assured that the situation is under control.
To prevent further spread, the state Ministry of Agriculture has sealed the affected area, depopulated the remaining chickens, and decontaminated the compound.
The Ministry has also decontaminated the premises where live birds are sold at the Janguza market and educated sellers on the effects of bird flu .
The veterinary doctor in charge of the clinic, Dr. Abdullahi Abubakar Gaya, advised poultry keepers to isolate newly bought birds for at least two weeks before mixing them with others.
He also urged them to take their birds to the nearest veterinary clinic if they notice any sickness and to avoid touching dead animals and birds to prevent infection .
This outbreak has prompted concerns about the potential spread of the disease, and residents, especially poultry rearers, are urged to report any suspected cases to the authorities immediately .
