    Sani Haruna

Residents of Dutsinma Local Government Area in Katsina State are grappling with a severe water shortage, forcing them to rely on raw water from streams, dams, and expensive water vendors.

The solar-powered water system constructed by the state government is not functioning properly, leaving residents without access to clean drinking water. Tap water has become a luxury, and households are struggling to cope with the situation.

Water vendors are taking advantage of the situation, selling 25-liter Jerry cans of water for N100, a price that is unaffordable for many low-income earners. Students have abandoned their classes to search for water, adding to the crisis.

The use of contaminated water poses a significant risk of water-borne diseases like cholera, bilharzia, diarrhea, and typhoid fever. Furthermore, the influx of foreign water vendors from Niger Republic has raised concerns about insecurity in the area.

Residents are calling on the local and state governments to find a lasting solution to the problem.

They have appealed to the government to repair the solar-powered water system and provide access to clean drinking water.

The Katsina State government has allocated N50 billion to tackle water scarcity in the state.

However, residents are eagerly waiting for the government to intervene and provide a lasting solution to their water woes.
