In a significant move towards promoting environmental sustainability, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in collaboration with the Kano State Ministry of Environment and Climate MoECC Change has flagged off a tree planting campaign
The event, which also featured a plastic trash pick-up campaign, was organized in commemoration of World Environment Day 2025.

The tree planting exercise commenced at Government Secondary School Kundila, located in Tarauni Local Government Area.
From there, a delegation embarked on a road walk, extending the environmental activities to key locations across the state.
Speaking at the event, UNICEF Kano Chief of Field Office Mr. Rahma Rihood Mohammed Farah, emphasized that the tree planting and plastic cleanup activities align with UNICEF’s global Green Rising Initiative.

This initiative seeks to empower young people to take climate action through volunteering, developing green skills, and environmental advocacy.
Mr. Farah highlighted that plastic pollution remains one of the biggest threats to the planet, with over 400 million tons of plastic produced annually much of which ends up polluting rivers, oceans, soil, and even our food.
He noted that plastic pollution affects children directly, causing physical harm, chemical exposure, respiratory issues, and more.
“As the UN agency dedicated to children, UNICEF is committed to initiatives and actions that ensure a sustainable and clean environment for every child,”
He urged everyone to recognize the impact of small actions like picking up trash or using a reusable water bottle on building a cleaner, greener, and more beautiful world.
“Together, we can make a difference,”
Speaking at the event, the Kano State Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahiru Muhammad Hashim represented by the Special Adviser on Environmental Sanitation, Alhaji Abdullahi Sule Bichi, emphasized that tackling plastic pollution requires collective action from government, individuals, and organizations.
He highlighted that plastic pollution manifests in various forms including littering, marine debris, microplastics, water contamination, and abandoned fishing nets.
“and is a growing threat to ecosystems and human health”
Dr. Hashim reaffirmed that the Kano State Government, under the leadership of Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, remains fully committed to ensuring environmental sustainability and promoting sustainable practices across the state.
He also commended UNICEF and other partners for their continued support and collaboration in making World Environment Day 2025 a success.
The Kano world environment day 2025 was organized by UNICEF in collaboration with MoECC and other partners.
