    FG Calls for Conflict-Sensitive Climate Adaptation to Tackle Insecurity

    The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Environment,Mahmud Adam Kambari has urged stakeholders to adopt conflict sensitivity and peace building in the management of their sectorial climate adaptation plan.

    The Permanent Secretary represented by the Director II of the Department of Climate Change, Mrs Victoria Pwol, disclosed this recently in Abuja while declaring open the Inception workshop on capacity development for conflict sensitivity and launch of the report on Integrating Conflict Sensitivity and Peace building into Nigeria’s National Adaptation Planning (NAP).

    Kambari believed that managing peace and conflict resolution will drastically reduce farmers-herders crises, cattle rustling, banditry which currently threatens the security and climate change of our country.

    He called on the stakeholders to adhere to the objective of global network on peace, conflict and NAP process which requires to design conflict – sensitive NAPs, namely leadership, data, knowledge communication, financing, institutional arrangement; stakeholders engagement.

    Also, to offer practical entry points to design NAP processes that align with peace building objectives and to provide how countries can integrate conflict and build considerations into NAP processes.

    He used the forum to thank the Global Network for their support, both technical and financial in achieving NAPs conflict-sensitivity in Nigeria.

    Earlier in her welcome address, the Director of the department of Climate Change, Dr. Iniagbon Abiola-Awe who was represented by the Deputy Director, Vulnerablility and adaptation Division, Mr. Jonah Barde thanked all the participants for honouring their invitation and called for robust contributions during the technical section.

    Dr. Abiola-Awe noted that climate change impacts are on the rise globally and Nigeria is not exempted with extreme weather and climate variability impacting many sectors , key infrastruture, biodiversity causing security challenges that can lead to future climate change scenarios.

    The Representative of NAP Global Network, Katherine Smith in her goodwill message noted that supporting Nigeria including other countries was to ensure the reduction of the impact of conflict in climate change sensitivity reduced globally.

    Dr Gerald Okafor of the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution, Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that they will add value in designing the NAPs to mitigate conflict in climate change while DCP Kabiru Abdullah in charge of Coastal management of the Nigerian Police Force H/quarters promised to reflect their perception in conflict management.
