Floods and windstorms have claimed 49 lives and destroyed 226 communities, in Kano State.

The Executive Secretary, Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Isiyaku Abdullahi Kubarachi made the disclosure while briefing newsmen in the state capital.

Kubarachi said the disaster has affected 226 communities across 27 local government areas, with 6,583 houses destroyed and 38,814 persons affected.

He pointed out that, the flood has resulted in significant damage, with 8,289 farmlands equivalent to 36,265 hectares destroyed 1,414 persons displaced, and 139 injured.

“The LGAs affected are Tudun Wada, Gwale, Wudil, Danbatta, Ajingi, Dala, Gwarzo, Madobi, Bichi, Kano Municipal, Karaye, Tarauni, Minjibir, Bebeji, Rogo, Shanono, Kabo, Garin Malam, Ungoggo Kumbotso, Nasarawa, Kura, Dawakin Kudu, Dawakin Tofa,Gezawa, Rogo and Bagwai”, he said.

Additionally, The executive secretary highlighted that the agency has visited the victims and provided relief materials to alleviate their suffering.

Kubarachi who reassured the public of SEMA’s commitment to protect lives and properties, saying that they will continue to work tirelessly to address the challenges posed by the flood, however appealed to wealthy individuals to support the government’s efforts in assisting the flood victims.

The executive secretary urged residents to take preventive measures, such as clearing drainage systems and avoiding building on waterways, to mitigate the impact of flooding and other environmental hazards
