The Kano State House of Assembly (KNHA) has passed the Motor Vehicle Administration Bill 2025.
The bill was considered in the committee of the whole and third reading during its plenary session presided over by Speaker Alhaji Jibril Isma’il Falgore.
Addressing newsmen after sitting, Majority Leader Alhaji Lawan Hussaini Dala stated that the new law aims to promote road sanity and improve compliance with driving regulations in the state.
He explained that, the bill provides for the establishment of the Kano State Motor Vehicle Administration Agency, which will be tasked with ensuring that vehicle owners possess valid driver’s licenses, learner’s permits, roadworthiness certificates, windscreen wipers, and other essential road safety requirements.
Alhaji Lawan clarified that the new agency’s duties will not overlap with those of the Kano Road Traffic Agency (KAROTA).
The majority leader noted that, While KAROTA oversees general traffic management, the new agency will specifically handle issues related to vehicle documentation, such as driver’s licenses and number plates.
Lawan pointed out that, the agency will be led by an experienced Managing Director, supported by a management team.
“Its board of directors will include representatives from key transport stakeholders, including NURTW and NATO, to ensure inclusive and effective governance”
The house adjourned Its session in a motion moved by the Majority Leader Lawan Hussaini Dala.
