Police have launched a comprehensive investigation into a tragic incident that occurred on May 25, 2025, in the Rano Local Government Area of Kano State, which led to the deaths of a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and a suspect who was in custody.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the unrest began after the arrest and detention of a motorcycle mechanic, Abdullahi Musa, for reckless and dangerous riding.
While in custody, Musa reportedly showed signs of weakness and was taken to Rano General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Following news of the suspect’s death, a group of miscreants launched an attack on the Rano Police Division, looting and setting parts of the station ablaze.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Bakori, has ordered a transparent and thorough investigation to determine the immediate and remote causes of the incident and to bring those responsible to justice.
The command confirmed that 27 suspects have been arrested in connection with the violence, with efforts ongoing to identify and apprehend others involved.
The police have appealed for calm, urging residents not to take the law into their hands. The command has also commiserated with the family of the deceased DPO, acknowledging his sacrifice in the line of duty.
The Emir of Rano, His Highness Ambassador Mohammed Isah Umar (Autan Bawo 19), received a condolence visit from the police leadership.
