A high-powered delegation led by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, and the President, Global Development of the Gates Foundation, Dr Chris Elias, visited Kano State to strengthen efforts to reduce maternal mortality, end polio transmission, improve routine immunisation, and enhance healthcare delivery.
The team, comprising representatives from the Gates Foundation, Aliko Dangote Foundation, and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), held a technical meeting with the Commissioner of Health and other partners to discuss challenges in healthcare delivery and potential solutions.
Prof. Pate commended Kano State’s investment in health, particularly the establishment of the first subnational Centre for Disease Control to strengthen disease surveillance.
However, he expressed concern over the resurgence of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus and fake finger marking of children during immunisation campaigns in Kano.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to partnering with the federal government and development agencies to improve healthcare delivery in the state.
The visit concluded with a tour of selected health facilities in Kano State.
