The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC has recalled one lot of Benylin Paediatric Syrup manufactured by Johnson & Johnson, following recent toxicity findings on the product.

In a notice to the public on its X handle, NAFDAC said laboratory analysis conducted on the product shows it contains an unacceptable high level of diethylene glycol, which is found to cause acute oral toxicity in laboratory animals.

The agency said ‘Diethylene Glycol’ is also toxic and fatal to humans when consumed, with effects such as abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, inability to pass urine, headache, altered mental state, and acute kidney injury, which may lead to death.

NAFDAC urged importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers to exercise caution and vigilance within the supply chain to avoid the importation, distribution, sale, and use of substandard (contaminated) regulated products.

NAFDAC bans sale of Dex Luxury bar soap

In another development, NAFDAC has announced the ban on the sale of Dex Luxury Bar Soap (No 6 mystic flower) by the European Union, EU.

In a notice to the public, NAFDAC explained that the product contains Butyphenyl Methylpropional, which violates the cosmetic products regulation due to its potential to harm the reproductive system.

According to the post, the EU had previously banned the product because it poses risks to the health of unborn children and can cause skin sensitization.

‘’Although this product is not on the NAFDAC database, importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers are advised to exercise caution and vigilance within the supply chain to avoid the importation, distribution, sale, and use of the above-mentioned product,’’ it read.
