The National Library of Nigeria (NLN) is partnering with the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to advance their respective organizational mandates.
This collaboration was highlighted during a courtesy visit by the National Librarian/CEO, Prof. Chinwe Anunobi, to the Director General of NOA, Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu.
Prof. Anunobi emphasized the synergy between the two agencies’ mandates and the need to work together to develop strategic templates for achieving shared goals.
She pointed out that libraries worldwide play a critical role in preserving national heritage, and that every publication—tangible and intangible—produced in Nigeria should be deposited with the National Library.
“The library also champions national reading initiatives, promoting lifelong learning and sensitizing authors and publishers on compliance with global publishing standards”
She further shared details of the NLN’s 2025–2030 Strategic Plan, which places special emphasis on the youth, who make up about 35% of Nigeria’s population.
“The plan aims to encourage reading, especially among young people. One of the flagship programs under this plan is the “Read Aloud” initiative, which is implemented across all state branches of the National Library. Through this program, citizens are expected to read and familiarize themselves with the content of the Nigerian Constitution”
Prof. Anunobi expressed optimism that, given the agencies’ shared vision and mandates, the collaboration would greatly benefit the public.
The DG NOA,Malam Issa-Onilu commended the National Library for its initiatives that not only promote reading but also encourage active civic engagement through reading aloud.
He acknowledged the significant role of the library in preserving the heritage of the society. He noted the overlap in mandates between the NLN and NOA and expressed confidence that the partnership would strengthen their ability to meet their objectives.
The DG also pointed out the concerning trend of youth disengagement from intellectual pursuits, as many are more attracted to entertainment.
“NOA had established a Youth Engagement and Inclusion”
