Rice fortification has been described as an effective way of tackling malnutrition for a healthy society in Nigeria.
The project manager of Technoserve Nigeria, Mr Seun Elere, stated this during a one-day workshop on Promoting Rice Fortification in Nigeria PRiFN organized by Technoserve Nigeria in collaboration with the World Food Program for journalists and nutrition stakeholders in Kano.
Mr Elere maintained that the addition of essential vitamins and minerals to rice or the replacement of micronutrients lost during rice milling would increase its nutritional value.
He pointed out that the PRiFN program was launched in 2021 after the federal government has approved the fortification of rice in 2020.
A food fortification expert with the World Food Program in Nigeria, Ekene Onyeagba, highlighted the agenda of the WFP for achieving better health, education and nutrition needs..
Earlier in his remarks, the Kano State Commissioner for Information, Halilu Dantiye, represented by the Director of Public Enlightenment of the ministry, Muhammad Zakari, appreciated the efforts of Technoserve and the World Food Program through the PRiFN towards supporting the state government on rice fortification.
