President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reassured Catholic bishops that his administration is committed to building a resilient Nigeria, despite the current economic challenges.
He acknowledged the difficulties Nigerians are facing but emphasized that the economic reforms are necessary for the country’s future.
During a meeting with the Catholic Bishop’s Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) at the State House in Abuja, President Tinubu highlighted the importance of collective efforts to fight poverty, which he noted affects everyone regardless of religion.
He also stressed that the tax reform presents a good investment opportunity for citizens to build their nation.
The President defended his decision to remove fuel subsidies, stating it was a hard choice but necessary to prevent the country from bankruptcy.
He also commended the Catholic body’s commitment to education and healthcare, and promised to look into ways to support students of private institutions.
The CBCN President, Most Reverend Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, commended President Tinubu’s efforts to reposition the country and shared concerns on issues such as insecurity and poverty.
The bishops called for a well-defined vision of religion as a force for moral integrity and patriotic unity, and proposed that public funds be redirected towards pressing national needs.
Other notable attendees at the meeting included the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Idris Mohammed, and the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.
