The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has vowed to investigate the spot of the accident that caused the tragic death of 22 athletes who lost their lives in a recent road crash.
The Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, made this known during a condolence visit to the Kano State Government in Kano.
NAN reports the accident occurred at about 12:30pm on May 31, 2025, along Kano-Zaria road while the deceased athletes were returning from the just concluded national sports festival in Ogun state.
He said the Corps has initiated an investigation on the scene and cause of the accident as part of its mandate is to conduct thorough research and investigations into accident causes.
Represented by Assistant Corps Marshal Ahmed Umar, Muhammad described the incident as deeply heartbreaking and devastating.
According to him, “FRSC does not believe road crashes happen without cause. Rather, they are often the result of factors that were not properly managed.”
“That particular spot is quite notorious for being prone to fatal road traffic crashes.
“Our officials will carry out a detailed investigation at the accident site and make the report available for further necessary action,” he added.
He further stated the Corps is willing to partner with the state government to prevent and reduce the loss of lives on the roads.
Muhammed called on the government that any such traveling of interstates should involve FRSC for safety precautions.
He also said that the FRSC would continue to educate the general public on the safety of the road and drive with caution.
On his part, the Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam, said they did not only go to get medals, but they also gave their contribution to the unity of the state.
“They won medals and proudly came back to celebrate with the state when this sudden incident happened celebrated a few kilometers to Kano State”, he said.
He appreciates the show of love and concern by the corps marshal for commiserating with the people of Kano at large.
Abdussalam prayed for the repose of the soul and wished such a deadly occurrence would never happen again. (NAN)
