The Centre for Dryland Agriculture (CDA), Bayero University Kano BUK has commenced a two-day training programme aimed at empowering women farmers with climate-smart agricultural practices to enhance food and nutrition security.
The training, organized by CDA in collaboration with the Arewa Women Initiative for Climate Change Advocacy and Environmental Sustainability (AWIFCA)
The objective of the training is to build the capacity of women farmers by equipping them with knowledge and practical skills in sustainable agricultural techniques that respond to the challenges of climate change while improving household food availability and nutritional outcomes.
Training sessions include an overview of urban and peri-urban agriculture, as well as practical modules on the production of cabbage, parsley, tomato, cucumber, and sweet potato—all aimed at promoting food and nutrition security.
Participants will also embark on a field visit to CDA’s Climate-Smart Agriculture Learning Site at its Training and Research Farm.
In his opening remarks, the Director of the CDA, Professor Sanusi Gaya Mohammed, welcomed the participants and reiterated the Centre’s mission to improve livelihoods and ensure the sustainable use of natural resources in the African drylands.
He emphasized CDA’s commitment to both short- and long-term training programmes designed to address manpower gaps and strengthen food systems through demand-driven research and innovation.
