Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, has died.
He passed away this afternoon at a clinic in London, according to a statement released by his family.
The news was confirmed by Garba Shehu, former presidential spokesperson, through his official X (formerly Twitter) handle.
Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023, was a key figure in the country’s modern political history. He was known for his strong stance against corruption, focus on national security, and efforts toward infrastructural development.
Reactions have continued to pour in from across the country and beyond, with many Nigerians expressing sorrow and offering prayers for the late leader.
“Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. May Allah forgive him and admit him into Aljannatul Firdaus,” read a post from Shehu.
Funeral arrangements are yet to be officially announced by the family.
