The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has suspended one of its members, Mr. Steve Osuji, for breaching the “off the record” protocol outlined in the Code of Ethics for Nigerian journalists.
In a statement jointly signed by NGE President, Mr. Eze Anaba, and General Secretary, Mr. Onuoha Ukeh, the Guild said Mr. Osuji violated a mutual agreement reached during its 25th Biennial National Convention held recently in Enugu.

According to the statement, the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mr. Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, had delivered a keynote address during the convention on the condition that it would remain off the record and not be reported or published.
However, Mr. Osuji went on to publish content based on the confidential address on his personal social media platforms, an act the Guild described as a serious breach of ethical conduct and professional trust.
“As a professional body committed to upholding the highest journalistic standards, we consider Mr. Osuji’s actions a grave violation of the confidentiality agreement and a breach of our Code of Ethics,” the statement read.

The Guild has consequently suspended Mr. Osuji’s membership for one year, effective immediately.
In addition, the NGE issued a formal apology to the Director-General of the DSS and the institution he represents, acknowledging the embarrassment caused by the publication.
“We deeply regret the breach and the embarrassment it may have caused the DSS. Measures are being put in place to prevent a recurrence,” the Guild stated.
The disciplinary action highlights the NGE’s commitment to professional integrity, accountability, and ethical journalism.
