In a bid to strengthen primary healthcare services, particularly for women, Kano State-Led Accountability Mechanism KanSLAM and Pathfinder International collaborated to train Ward Development Committees (WDCs) in Kano State.
The two-day workshop, which brought together WDC chairmen from five local government areas, focused on tracking and implementing the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF).

The training aimed to enhance community advocacy, communication skills, and monitoring of BHCPF funds.

The state team lead Pathfinder International Kano, Gombe Ibrahim emphasized the NGO’s commitment to primary healthcare as a route to universal health coverage.
“We advocate for primary health care as the route to universal health coverage and for its inclusion in all health policies,” he said.
He highlighted that, the partnership between KanSLAM and Pathfinder International seeks to develop the healthcare system through training and retraining WDC chairmen, ultimately reducing maternal mortality.

The chairperson of the KanSLAM knowledge committee, Hajiya Nafisa Murtala Ahmed, explained that the objectives of the workshop are to enable participants to understand the BHCPF framework, use the checklist for tracking, and strengthen community advocacy and communication skills.
Presenting a paper, the consultant, Associate Professor Auwal Halilu, identified Key challenges in advocacy for BHCPF implementation, including resistance from stakeholders, bureaucratic delays, and lack of data-driven advocacy.
The training is part of a broader effort to strengthen primary healthcare services in Kano State, with a focus on community participation and intersectoral collaboration.
