The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has taken a significant step toward strengthening subnational collaboration on data governance by hosting a high-level delegation from Kano State at its headquarters in Abuja.
The delegation was led by the Commissioner for Science, Technology, and Innovation, Dr. Yusuf Ibrahim Koformata, who said the visit was a direct follow-up to the regional training organized by the NDPC for the seven North-Western states.
Dr. Koformata commended the Commission for its warm reception and impactful engagement during the training session.

He reaffirmed Kano State’s commitment to advancing its digital economy and emphasized the central role of data protection and privacy in enabling sustainable digital transformation at the state level.
Responding to the Kano State delegation, the leadership of the NDPC praised the state government for its proactive approach and willingness to build on the outcomes of the regional training.
The Commission also shared insights into its mandate, strategic goals, and the importance of a robust data protection ecosystem as a foundation for Nigeria’s digital development.
To consolidate the engagement, both parties agreed to establish a joint working group that will lead the process of drafting and finalizing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the NDPC and the Kano State Government.
The MoU is expected to formalize collaboration in areas such as data protection policy implementation, public sector compliance, awareness campaigns, and capacity development.
Speaking after the meeting, the NDPC reiterated its commitment to supporting states in building trusted data governance frameworks that align with national and international standards.
