The Kano State Government KNSG has established specialized centers across the state to provide care for individuals suffering from hypertension.

This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran, during a press briefing held in commemoration of World Hypertension Day on May 17.

Dr. Labaran described hypertension often referred to as a “silent killer” as a major public health concern, warning that if left uncontrolled, it can lead to serious complications such as heart disease, stroke, kidney damage, and other cardiovascular conditions.

He emphasized the commitment of the state government in addressing the growing prevalence of hypertension among the population, noting that Kano is taking active steps in line with global efforts to combat the disease.

The Commissioner highlighted that World Hypertension Day, initiated by the World Hypertension League (WHL) in 2005, is observed annually on May 17 to raise awareness and promote preventive measures against high blood pressure. Over 1.28 billion adults globally are affected by the condition.

“The WHL, alongside global health organizations, marks this day with free screening camps, educational sessions, and health talks,”

“The theme for this year’s event emphasizes the importance of accurate blood pressure measurement and encourages individuals to take control of their health. “

Dr. Labaran advised individuals to adopt healthier lifestyles by reducing salt intake, engaging in regular physical activity, managing stress effectively, and avoiding tobacco and alcohol. Such measures, he said, can significantly lower the risk of hypertension and improve overall well-being.

He also acknowledged the efforts of the GAMMUN Centre for Care and Development Nigeria (GCCDN), which is partnerin” with the government through quarterly immersion programs aimed at finding long-term solutions to hypertension.

In celebration of World Hypertension Day, the Ministry of Health organized a health walk and a press briefing to raise awareness about prevention, early detection, and effective management of hypertension.

The walk began at the Ministry of Health, Post Office Road, at 8:30 a.m., and concluded at the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) inside Nassarawa Hospital, where the press conference took place.

The theme for World Hypertension Day 2025 is “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer!”
