The Africa Health Budget Network (AHBN) is calling on the Federal Government of Nigeria to urgently release the ₦200 million allocated for Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) in the 2025 approved national budget.

AHBN commended the Federal Government, the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (FMOH), and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) for prioritizing IPC through the inclusion of the allocation under the budget line: Health Promotion and Disease Prevention/IPC, code ERGP25217466.

“This allocation is a major step toward strengthening Nigeria’s health security and safeguarding public health,” said Dr. Aminu Magashi Garba, Founder and CEO of AHBN.

“We urge the Federal Government to promptly release the funds to ensure timely implementation of critical IPC measures.”

These measures include the provision of clean water, electricity, liquid soap, sterilizing equipment, cleaning supplies, handwashing facilities, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) across healthcare facilities—especially in rural and underserved areas.

AHBN emphasized that timely release and effective utilization of the funds by NCDC will:

Enhance the impact of the National IPC Operational Plan.

The organization acknowledged the support of AFENET and Resolve to Save Lives (RTSL) for their technical assistance and funding during advocacy efforts, which led to the reinstatement of the IPC budget line after its removal in 2024.

With their support, AHBN led strategic engagements with the Budget Office of the Federation and key stakeholders, alongside public awareness efforts through media and civil society platforms.

AHBN is urging NCDC Director-General, Dr. Jide Idris, to prioritize the timely disbursement and strategic implementation of the allocated funds.

The organization also reaffirmed its commitment to monitoring the release and utilization of the IPC funds to ensure transparency and impact.

AHBN is a key member of Nigeria’s SWAp Technical Working Group on Health Security, the National IPC Technical Working Group, and the Global Health Security Agenda Consortium (GHSAC).
