Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has directed the newly inaugurated Committee on Voters Registration and Civic Awareness to ensure that no fewer than 10 million eligible residents in the state collect or register for their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

The governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Faruk Umar Ibrahim, issued the directive while inaugurating the 36-member committee in his office.

Faruk described the assignment as a “herculean task” that requires diligence and dedication, stressing that the committee must monitor all polling units across the state to ensure residents collect their voter cards.

He added that the committee will also work closely with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to guarantee the availability of cards.

“Kano is the most populous state in Nigeria, yet millions of eligible voters remain disenfranchised simply because they have not collected their cards. Your duty is to ensure at least five million additional voters are registered and that those with existing cards collect them,” he said.

Faruk emphasized that voter registration is not just a civic responsibility but a compulsory duty, noting that the committee must carry out aggressive enlightenment campaigns across the state to mobilize citizens.

He added that Governor Yusuf is personally monitoring the assignment, as the success of the exercise will determine Kano’s ability to elect leaders with integrity and vision for development.

In his response, the committee chairman and Commissioner for Information, Ibrahim Waiya, assured that the team views the assignment as a call to service and will not disappoint the governor.

The SSG further noted that the exercise is inclusive, calling on all stakeholders opposition parties, religious leaders, journalists, business communities, traditional institutions, and government officials to support the mobilization drive.
