The Kano State Government has approved hosting a landmark National Summit on Harnessing the Creative Industry aimed at boosting Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
This decision follows a compelling proposal from the Kannywood Foundation, highlighting Kano’s pivotal role as the cultural and creative capital of Northern Nigeria.
This was contained in a statement signed by the Commissioner for information and internal affairs Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya made available to newsmen.
According to him, the Summit will provide a strategic platform to unlock Kano’s rich creative potential, spanning film production, fashion, artisanal crafts, music, literature, and digital content creation.
“Expected to attract key stakeholders nationwide—including international development partners, federal ministries and agencies, creative entrepreneurs, investors, and global digital platforms such as Netflix and Amazon—the event will focus on leveraging the creative sector to diversify the economy, create jobs, and foster innovation”
To oversee the planning and execution, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has approved the formation of a Local Organizing Committee (LOC) comprising representatives from government, the private sector, creative industry associations, traditional institutions, and academia.
Governor Yusuf emphasized,
“This summit is not merely an event, but a strategic initiative to position Kano State at the forefront of Nigeria’s creative economy. Our indigenous film industry, Kannywood, alongside our world-renowned artisans, are gaining deserved recognition. Through this summit, Kano aims to stimulate sustainable economic growth, empower our youth, and unlock new development opportunities in line with our people-oriented vision.”
