The Kano State House of Assembly (KNHA) has urged Kano state government (KNSG) to call on Kano state electricity distribution company KEDCO to desist from disconnecting transformers without notice.

This was a sequel to deliberations on the floor of the house during plenary session presided over by the speaker Alhaji Jibril Isma’il Falgore.

Mover of the motion, who doubles as a member representing Kiru constituency Alhaji Usman Abubakar Tasi’u argued that, the Kano state electricity distribution company)KEDCO), has disconnected and removed 150-170 transformers from Kiru Bebeji, Tudun Wada, Rogo and Karaye local government areas.

He stressed that most of the transformers were purchased by individuals and communities but unfortunately, KEDCO do not adhere to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission Law 2023 which provides 12 days notice before disconnection of transformers.

” In most cases, individuals and communities pay for transformers and their maintenance but in the end, the company do not provide adequate electricity and total disconnection of the transformers in some areas”

Usman called on KNSG to set up a committee that would discuss with KEDCO for possible reconnection of the affected areas.

Contributing, member representing Ungoggo Aminu Sa’adu pointed out that, the motion is the 3rd of it’s kind as there was similar efforts during the 8th and 9th assemblies on the need for improved power supply.

He highlighted that the Kano house of Assembly and other government ministries and agencies spend huge amounts of money to purchase diesel due to inadequate electricity.

Aminu noted that the provision of electricity would boost commercial and economic activities in the state.

“The state government should intensify efforts to change the current situation where there is a major setback”

After careful deliberations, the House adopted a resolution and recommended that the state government mandate KEDCO to avoid disconnecting transformers without notice.

In another development, the house has recommended the appointment of Lawan Badamasi as a member Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC).

Earlier the House Standing Committee on Election Matters presented a report on the screening of the nominee.

The chairman of the committee Murtala Muhammad Kadage maintained that Lawan Badamasi has met all the criteria and is qualified to be appointed as a member of KANSIEC.

The house unanimously adopted and recommended the appointment of Lawan Badamasi in line with section A and D of the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission KANSIEC law 2001.

The house adjourned it’s sitting in a motion moved by the majority leader Lawan Hussaini Dala
