The Nigerian Senate has approved President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s proclamation of a state of emergency in Rivers State, but with certain conditions.
The approval was given after a closed-door session, where senators deliberated on the proclamation in line with the 1999 Constitution as amended.

According to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, the approval is based on the powers conferred on the Senate by Section 305, Subsection 2 of the Constitution. The conditions attached to the approval include:
A review of the directives given on the state of emergency proclamation, ensuring it is not terminated before six months.
The constitution of an ad-hoc committee to oversee the administration of Rivers State.
The establishment of a committee of well-meaning Nigerians to reconcile the warring factions in Rivers State.
