The President of the African Media Network for the Promotion of Health and Environment (REMAPSEN), Bamba Youssouf, has called on media professionals across the continent to take greater responsibility in promoting accurate information on health and environmental issues, as the organization marks its fifth anniversary.

Founded in 2020, REMAPSEN now boasts membership from nearly 40 African countries, working collaboratively to raise awareness, advocate for sustainable development, and promote public health.

In a commemorative statement on Friday, June 13, President Youssouf reflected on the achievements of the network and its growing influence, while urging a renewed focus on media leadership.

“As we celebrate five years of impactful work, I want to thank every member of REMAPSEN for their dedication. The first five years laid the groundwork across our member nations. Now, the next five years must be about reaffirming REMAPSEN’s leadership in Africa,” he said.

He emphasized the media’s critical role in confronting public health challenges, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, and ensuring that African citizens are empowered with accurate, science-based information.

Youssouf reiterated REMAPSEN’s vision of a continent where every citizen has the right to truthful and accessible information, especially on issues impacting public health and the environment.

“Africa will be better for it when its people are properly informed. The media, as the fourth estate, must assume its responsibilities in this era of emerging pandemics and environmental crises,” he added.

REMAPSEN’s second five-year phase, according to its president, will focus on consolidating its work, expanding partnerships, and strengthening its voice in regional and global discourse on sustainable development and public health communication.

As REMAPSEN celebrates this milestone, its leadership is calling on journalists, broadcasters, and media houses to deepen their engagement in the shared mission of building a healthier, more resilient Africa.
