Five innovative winners have emerged at the maiden edition of Dr. Aminu Magashi’s Annual Dabo Health Discourse, a healthcare pitching competition initiated by Kano State Medical Students Association (KAMSA) in 2024 and launched on Friday, 7th February 2025 at Mahmud Tukur Theatre II Bayero University, Kano.
Each of the winners presented his/her innovative healthcare solutions to students, stakeholders, and judges during the competition, and the top 3 winners emerged alongside 4th and 5th runners.
The maiden Annual Dabo Health Discourse, funded by AMG Foundation provided awards, certificates, and cash prizes to the five winners with the top three winners presented with awards and one hundred thousand, seventy-five thousand, and fifty thousand naira respectively, while the fourth and fifth runners were presented with certificates and cash prizes of twenty-five thousand naira each.
Mustapha Ibrahim Abdullahi, a level 400 medical student from BUK who emerged as the first winner, came up with “Mind Up”, a comprehensive mobile app for a mental health support system for stressed professionals. “Wind-Up” innovation aims at enhancing mental well-being through the integration of mental health, nutrition, sleep science, and physical fitness.
Other winners are Maryam Abdul from Northwest University, Kano, 2nd; Abdussamad Amru Jibril from BUK,3rd; and Rabi’a Sanusi Wakili from Emirates College of Health Sciences and Technology as the 4th runner; Salim Sani Haladu as 5th runner.
The event featured a keynote speech by Dr. Musa Muhammad Bello of the Department of Community Medicine, BUK, who made a presentation on the topic “Transforming Healthcare through Students’ Innovation: Challenges and Opportunities.
Dr. Aminu Magashi Garba, the Chair of AMG Foundation, congratulated the innovative winners and pledged to have lunch meetings with them to celebratelisten listening to some of their innovative healthcare solutions for further guidance.
Making his remarks, the outgoing KAMSA President, Abdulrahman Habib Maigiwa, congratulated the winners and thanked the judges of the competition and the AMG Foundation for supporting the initiative.
